Just across the Firth of Forth from Edinburgh is Fife, also known as the ‘Kingdom of Fife,’ which is one of Scotland’s most beautiful and historic regions. Another nickname for Fife is the Home of Golf, thanks to the Old Course at St Andrews being one of the oldest courses in the world. The Old Course has hosted the Open Championship more than any other venue, making it a huge draw for golf fans. On top of this, Fife has an incredible coastline, which is home to some amazing fishing villages, as well as rolling countryside further inland, with its historic estates and castles. All these come together to make Fife a fantastic destination to host your wedding.
Our 2025 Wedding Report found that the average cost of a wedding in Fife (as well as the rest of Scotland) is £18,617, making it slightly cheaper than the overall UK average of £20,822. It’s also a lot more affordable than London’s average of £28,629, so it’s a great place to host a wedding if you’re looking to get out of the city and spend less on your special day.
Whether you dream of a romantic coastal wedding, a countryside celebration or a historic castle venue, Fife has something for everyone so you can have the wedding you’ve always wanted.
Many couples getting married in Fife choose to embrace the region’s coastal beauty, sprawling countryside and historic heritage.
Both golf and history buffs are drawn to the area, heavily influenced by the University Of St Andrews, Lower and Upper College Halls and Old Course Hotel Golf Resort and Spa being not only famous in their own right, but also beautiful choices for wedding venues.
Coastal weddings are also a big trend, with venues along the Fife Coastal Path and St Andrews Bay offering breathtaking sea views. And with so many of the beaches in the area being award-winning, they offer couples the opportunity to take seaside wedding photos that provide drop-dead gorgeous backdrops.
Castle and stately home weddings are another big trend and bring a touch of grandeur to any wedding. Couples who host their wedding at venues like these are also keen to include traditional Scottish elements into their ceremony and reception, including kilts, bagpipes and ceilidh dancing.
Sustainability-focused weddings are becoming more common in Fife, with many couples choosing local suppliers, seasonal flowers and eco-friendly venues. This is evident by couples in Fife and the rest of Scotland spending less than most other regions of the UK on flowers, spending an average of £889, compared to the UK average of £1,132. This shows just how much natural beauty is around the area already, with couples all too happy to use it to their advantage.
Fife offers an incredible variety of wedding venues, from ancient castles to seaside hotels perfect for all types of tastes, styles and budgets.
There are more than 150 castles and towers around Fife, as well as loads of incredible manor houses and stately homes, so if you’re looking for a venue filled with Scottish history, there’s plenty to take your pick from. Birkhill Castle is just one small but impressive part of a sprawling 1,500 acres of countryside and coastline, including its own private beach. Kinnettles Castle is truly luxurious, with views over the nearby valley – it even has its own casino! There’s also the scenic Kilconquhar Castle Estate with its 120 acres of pristine gardens, and Cambo Estate, which is the ideal venue for a deluxe party.
With 14 award-winning beaches and 30 parks and green spaces, Fife really is a beautiful part of the country. So, why not make the most of what the region has to offer and consider an outdoor wedding? Plenty of venues have an outdoor ceremony and reception space, so you can tie the knot against the backdrop of the legendary Scottish landscape. Venues such as Kinkell Byre, The Cow Shed Crail and Backhouse Rossie Estate have brilliant outdoor spaces that should definitely be added to your list of considerations.
Being home to both a prestigious university and a massively celebrated golf course, you can include both in your big day so you truly have a wedding to remember. University Of St Andrews, Lower and Upper College Halls and Old Course Hotel Golf Resort and Spa are both incredible venues, letting you tie the knot at a location with so much local history. Other unique and character-filled venues around Fife include Crail Community Hall, Woodside Events, and Drumoig Golf Hotel.
The area also has loads of options when it comes to affordable venues, which are great if you want to have your dream wedding but not spend too much. Check out venues like Balbirnie House, Earls Hall and The Rhynd, and you might be surprised by just how amazing venues can be in Fife even if you have a smaller budget.
The average cost of a wedding venue in Fife (as well as the rest of Scotland) is £5,685, which is £300 less than the overall UK average of £5,945. So, not only can you find a marvellous venue in the area, but chances are you’ll also spend less than other couples across the country.
As one of Scotland’s most picturesque regions, many venues in Fife book up fast, so you’ll want to get in there as early as you can.
The average time for booking a venue is between 12 and 18 months ahead. For some of the more in-demand venues, or for dates during the busy summer season or at weekends, expect to have to book even further ahead – perhaps two or more years.
If you’re flexible with the season or day of the week, you may find availability within six to nine months. Winter and midweek weddings tend to have shorter lead times and can often be more budget-friendly.
Like much of Scotland and the UK as a whole, Fife’s weather can be unpredictable. There’s an average of 38 days of snow every year in Scotland, but every season brings something special to a wedding. In fact, some areas have even been known to have snow in June. But, with some careful planning and a little luck, you can have a picturesque wedding no matter what time of year you decide to get married.
Spring (March – May) is a beautiful time of year in Fife, with flowers blooming and green spaces like Pittencrieff Park and Dunfermline Glen coming to life. Temperatures range from 8°C (46°F) in March to 14°C (57°F) in May, with occasional spring showers adding to the Scottish charm. And of course, there’s the odd bit of snow from time to time.
Summer (June – August) is the most popular time for weddings in the area, with long daylight hours and temperatures between 15°C (59°F) and 19°C (66°F). Coastal and countryside weddings are beautiful in summer, especially at fantastic outdoor venues like Pratis Barns.
Autumn (September – November) is when things start to get a little colder, making it perfect for romantic, cosy weddings at venues that are less likely to feel the chill coming in from the North Sea. Temperatures range from 14°C (57°F) in September to 8°C (46°F) in November, but the changing leaves create stunning backdrops for photos in any one of the region’s parks or gardens.
Winter (December – February) is perfect for intimate and atmospheric weddings, especially in historic venues with roaring fires and beautifully lit receptions. With temperatures between 1°C (34°F) and 6°C (43°F), winter weddings in Fife are fabulous, especially when there’s a dusting of snow. Check out venues like Oswald House and Balmule House, which have lovely indoor spaces that are warm and welcoming during the colder months.
Fife is fairly easy to get to from across Scotland and the rest of the UK, making it accessible for guests to travel to and across the region.
Fife doesn’t have its own airport, but Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is just a short drive away, offering domestic and international flights from across the UK and beyond. From Edinburgh, it’s an easy 45-minute drive or train ride into Fife over the Forth Bridge or Queensferry Crossing.
For guests travelling by train, Fife has multiple railway stations, including Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy, and Leuchars for St Andrews, with regular services from Edinburgh, Glasgow and more.
Driving to Fife is straightforward, with the M90 and A92 providing quick access from Edinburgh, Dundee and Perth. Coastal and countryside roads make for a beautiful scenic drive, though guests should be prepared for narrow country lanes in more rural areas. Things can be a little dicey when it’s below freezing, and even more so when there’s a fresh layer of snow on the ground.
Fife is a fantastic place to visit, and thanks to its history and prestige, people come from all over. That means the area has a brilliant selection of places to stay, including luxurious countryside hotels and all the well-known budget chains. Many hotels in the area also double up as wedding venues in their own right, like Fairmont St Andrews, The Kingswood Hotel and DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh - Queensferry Crossing. That way, you can get married and have your reception all in one convenient location.
