We greatly regret using Oswald House for our wedding. There were several issues throughout the wedding weekend. Then we went through; ten months, a successful legal case, two enforcement attempts and freezing their bank account to try and get our security deposit back and we still haven't received it.
This review is our opinion on our experience with Oswald house and we do not claim to have information about anyone else's experience with the venue.
Initially we were thrilled to find Oswald house as we wanted an exclusive use venue that our family could stay in and it seemed so perfect. Our meetings with the owner and the current event organiser at the time went great and we felt like they were organised and really open to personalising our wedding weekend. However at the time of the wedding we had continuous issues from when we walked in the door until we left two days later. Nearly every part of our wedding and stay had problems, I'm not going to list each issue as it would be too long and I would get too upset but broadly; there were problems with the rooms, the new head events coordinator, the set up, the heating, leaks, the ceremony room, the drinks, and the reception room. I would say the only things that were up to expectations were the meals and the other two staff members at the weekend, who I know tried to compensate for things.
One of the constant issues was that the new event coordinator at the time of the wedding, who was in charge that weekend, we felt she was rude to both us and our guests and very ineffective, she didn't fulfill many of the personalised arrangements that we were so happy to have organised with the owner and constantly interrupted my day as the bride to ask and argue with me, about many of the prearranged things that were in the day plan written by the owner. including at one point where she tracked me down in the toilets to ask if I really wanted one of the prearranged items done, the answer was yes of course because that's why I had arranged it. After the wedding we got comments from nearly every guest saying the same thing, she was either irritable or down right rude in nearly every interaction, even just asking for cups for our grandparents or towels for the bedrooms.
Another big issue was that there was no champagne served at the drinks reception and when I addressed it with the coordinator I was told flat out that we didn't pay for any. We had prepaid hundreds of pounds for the drinks weeks before, specifically including several bottles of champagne. Then the selection of drinks we arranged for the guests coming into the meal were also missing, meaning we had no drinks for any of our toasts. Both these issues were extremely embarrassing for us as they made us look thoughtless towards our guests for basic considerations. The last example of some of the serious issues was that there were several bedrooms with leaks and several without central heating, in December, in Scotland, including my 90 year old grandparents room! These are the only examples I'm going to give of the event. But I think you can understand how embarrassed we were that this is the experience our guests had at our wedding venue.
Amazingly, worse than any issues throughout the weekend were the issues afterwards. We felt we had got on well with the owner so a few days after the wedding we sent her private feedback about some of the issues we had so she was aware of them, since she wasn't present at the weekend. Our wedding was in late December as mentioned and she didn't respond until February! This meant we also had not received our unused drinks money or deposit back since she hadn't been in touch, despite us attempting to communicate with her every two to three weeks. Once she had got back in communication we followed up about both of these and we were amazed to find out she was planning on keeping hundreds of pounds of our deposit. We found this out for the first time in March, over two months after the wedding!
They were trying to keep our deposit because of another big issue we had, one of their heavy curtains and curtain rails fell on our cake designer right before the wedding ceremony. We had brought this up with the owner in the email because as well as it being offal for our cake designer it also meant that with low winter sun streaming through the uncovered window, I and all my wedding party were temporarily blinded walking down the aisle and I couldn't see any of my guests or most importantly my now husband waiting for me or him seeing me in the dress for the first time. We also found out later all the pictures of the wedding procession were ruined because they were completely blown out with the bright light. We don't have pictures of our little nieces being jr bridesmaids, my sister as maid of honour or my parents walking me down the aisle. This upsets me more than anything else.
We were shocked that after having all these issues and many more not mentioned, we got blamed and money held from us. We eventually had to go through the legal system to attempt to get the money back, we won our case but still haven't received the money. Our wedding was in December of 2024 and at the time of writing it is November of 2025, over ten months later and the last update we heard is that after not responding to court notifications or written enforcements of the debt, one of their bank accounts has been frozen by sheriff officers due to the unpaid debt and it might take until next year to get our money back, that will be over a year since our wedding. We had decided to delay our review until our dealings were concluded so we could give a full account, but we never imagined it would take this long with no money returned so we felt we had to post even without the conclusion.
We thought we had found our dream venue with Oswald House and it turned out to be an ongoing nightmare. They broke my heart. We greatly regret using Oswald House for our wedding.
