Warning to Skylark Brides & Grooms - Impact all CURRENT bookings and those made moving forwards.
I’m sharing this as a serious warning to any couples who have already booked, or are considering booking, their wedding at Skylark. What has happened to us is deeply upsetting, and it’s something we believe other couples deserve to know—especially since the management is not proactively disclosing these changes, which has been one of the worst parts of it all.
We booked our wedding at Skylark in August 2024 for a date for next summer - two years in advance. Our contract clearly stated that we would have exclusive hire of the ‘’barn, bar, and Skylark suite’’. At the time, we understood and accepted that health club members and golfers would be on-site during the day, but were assured they would be gone by 7pm and that we would then have the venue to ourselves.
However, during a recent meeting with the new manager, we were blindsided by the news that policies had changed. Skylark is now planning to host other late-night events in the function room next to the wedding breakfast room. They are also using the barn for additional functions once new toilets are installed. This could include other wedding receptions when the barn is up and running. None of this has been communicated, despite it impacting current bookings opposed to just future ones. The manager herself said that we should be ‘’more worried about Club 19’’ opposed to barn bookings due to the proximity of this function room to the Skylark suit. One of the wedding coordinators also informed us that they have previously had issues with members of the public coming into the wedding, yet despite this, they are extending their evening party offering during bookings already made under the guise of exclusivity in the evening. This means our wedding—originally sold to us as a private, exclusive event—could now take place alongside one or even two other parties. None of this was communicated to us directly; we only found out by chance during a meeting with a supplier. Fair enough if this was for future bookings, however, despite our contract, we are being impacted by these changes also. The country club has limited toilet facilities and other amenities and our wedding was due to have over 110 evening guests, that coupled with the other parties will make this a huge concern.
When we raised this with management, referencing the clause in our contract that promised exclusive hire, we were told that we had a “different understanding” of what exclusive means. We asked for the original terms to be honoured and were told that doing so “doesn’t make financial sense” for the venue. There was no apology, no empathy—just a cold dismissal of our concerns. I left the meeting in tears, feeling as though our wedding had been reduced to nothing more than a revenue opportunity for a struggling business trying to recover from administration.
Throughout our experience, we’ve been passed between multiple wedding coordinators—none of whom seemed familiar with our booking. One didn’t even know our names. Promises and details discussed in meetings have been forgotten or left off our file. Most concerning was a coordinator openly expressing disappointment that she wouldn’t be receiving the commission from our booking. They have had a huge staff turnover in recent months, and the wedding co-ordinates we were communicating with initially have all left and the new management has not arrange for clear handovers to take place. The wedding coordinators said that they also won’t be allowing various other elements of what had been agreed and explained that the current structure for wedding coordinators at the venue is not working. The wedding coordinator shared that building work is also due but that weddings will be avoided, I honestly do not trust that weddings won’t be impacted given the scale of the work being proposed and the fact that weddings are booked at Skylark all year round. She did indicate that this would likely take place early next year therefore if your wedding is booked at this time then please be aware.
While Skylark still has many positive reviews online, it’s important to note that most of these reflect past experiences—not the venue’s current practices or management. These recent changes are not being disclosed unless directly questioned. Therefore, there will be brides and grooms who are not yet aware of these changes. I know that Skylark are active on wedding pages and trip advisor, replying to other reviews and being very defensive.
If you’ve already booked Skylark, contact management immediately and request clarity. You may be surprised by what you learn.
If you’re still considering this venue—my honest advice is to look elsewhere. There are plenty of other venues that honour their word and value your day as much as you do. The venue will likely dismiss this complaint and post and try to see that it is deleted. This is not coming from a place of bitterness, as at the end of the day we will get married and that’s all that matters, but of one of genuine concern for others.
