Blackfriars’ ornate medieval Banquet Hall was the celebrated venue used by King Edward III to receive royal Scot, Edward Balliol, in 1334 and boasts authentic and bespoke banners, chandeliers, wall coverings, stained-glass windows, reclaimed wooden screens, large oak dining tables and matching chairs, all created by local craftsmen.
Housed within a Grade 1 Listed Building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Blackfriars Restaurant opened in 2001 and has been in the same ownership ever since. The restaurant has held a AA Rosette for almost two decades and is recommended by the Michelin Guide and Good Food Guide. The restaurant has also won many awards including Taste of the North East and is now one of the most recognised and reputed restaurants in Newcastle.
The ground floor comprises the main restaurant, a stunning self contained Banquet Hall and an ornate Parlour Bar for early arrivals and drinks receptions as well as a sheltered courtyard. On the first floor the Tasting Room is housed within one of the former guild meeting rooms, as is the state-of-the-art Cookery School and other meeting rooms. The former friary, courtyard and gardens provide the perfect picture-postcard setting for your photographs.
Blackfriars is approved by Newcastle City Council for marriages and civil partnerships so you can enjoy both your ceremony and reception in one place. We have dedicated wedding coordinators to help your day and take care of all your wants and needs.
Blackfriars is able to accommodate most wedding formats. Just imagine the ceremony of your dreams in our ornate Banquet hall or unique Tasting Room, followed by a relaxed Champagne reception in the sheltered courtyard or historic Parlour Bar before heading back into the Banquet hall for a delicious and memorable wedding breakfast and evening party. Blackfriars really does have it all and it is the perfect venue for your big day!

It has a dressing suite, which makes it convenient for brides who want to get ready at the venue. The food is wonderful as well, and we recommend if possible for brides and grooms to have a meal the evening before at the restaurant, as we did with our groom/bridal parties and his parents. We had both our ceremony and reception at the venue, and it was the best choice, as it meant guests did not have to move between two places, as some do separate venues. Thank you to Laura Race, who was a wonderful wedding coordinator. It was just the perfect venue for us and for our guests (logistically) - room set up was also done perfectly and included all our request. The food of course was amazing!! We wouldn’t have enjoyed our wedding day as much as we did if not for Laura, Daniel and the rest of the team. Laura was extremely helpful throughout the process, was prompt in answering our queries/request and made sure they had everything beforehand for our set up for the next day. Our priority when booking our wedding venue was a venue with personality and really good food. At Blackfriars you get both! The mysterious medieval vibes made for fantastic photos and the food is phenomenal. We opted for the 5 course banquet and every single bite was amazing, but a special shout out to the canapes, I could have eaten them all if allowed. The staff at Blackfriars were phenomenal, they genuinely made the day for us due to their supportive and kind culture. I truly cannot recommend Blackfriars enough, we had the perfect day and it genuinely couldn't have been any better. Me andy wife had an evening wedding at Blackfriars. The moment that we both walked into the Banqueting Hall, we knew that was the place for us. It had an atmosphere to it even when not set up for a wedding. On the day itself, it looked amazing for both the ceremony and the wedding breakfast. It all just felt so right. We both had an absolutely amazing day from arriving to leaving many hours later. The food was excellent and the all the staff were so attentive and efficient. So slick from start to finish and they played a huge part in making our day so special. It was nothing short of sensational and that was all thanks to their wonderful wedding team. To start with Dan saved the day as I had a customised song to walk down the aisle to that decided not to load on the day. Dan managed to keep me calm and get it sorted seamlessly behind the scenes. The star of the day went to Rachel, who couldn't do enough for us and even went as far as offering to sit with our daughter whilst she had a nap, she then brought down cushions for her to lie down on in the Banquet Hall just in case. Rachel also assisted with packing our things away, so we had absolutely nothing to do, other than to enjoy our day. We also had an issue with our cake, no fault of Blackfriars, but the chef kindly patched it up and added decoration, to hide the broken bits. We absolutely loved the whole day, our guests were well looked after and we can't speak highly enough about this wonderful venue. We plan to return every year on our anniversary to celebrate.
