My husband and I got married on Saturday 31st August in Severndroog Castle, which is in Oxleas Wood on Shooters Hill.
Before we found Severdroog, we had found it hard to find a quaint wedding venue in London that would neatly fit out 25 or so guests. Neither of us are religious, so we were not going to get married in a symbolic building, but I also didn't just want to get married in a registry office: Just because I am not religious, doesn't mean I have to wed in a plain or boring space.
Severndroog was an accidental find, when we were watching BBC weather during a trip away and they filmed from the top of this building. They stated that you could see across seven counties from the top and that it was based in Greenwich. Having worked and studied in this borough, I was confused at where this could be and it was only when we looked it up, we realised it sat on Shooters Hill.
From our initial visit to the site (when I skipped back to the car and said to my other half "I want to get married here" to the moment one of the staff asked me if I was ready before I went into the ceremony area, the staff have been amazing. I'd say I'm not much of a girly girl, as I've always been very practical in life, but this venue and the people won me over from that first visit. The building is seeped in history, which I love, they have renewed bits of the building without being too fussy and it is just generally a lovely space to be in.
I very faint memories of the wedding service, as it flew by so quickly, but I really couldn't have asked for a nicer and more perfect space for our nearest and dearest. Everyone loved the venue and also the food (the site has their own company called Terrace Catering, who provide the most amazing food at a very reasonable cost, so highly recommend you book food with them too). We had the ceremony on the first floor and our food was served at tables on the second floor. We also had the viewing platform open on the roof at times, so we could have photos up there. We did a half day hire, in high season but we didn't book the whole building, so people were able to use the cafe downstairs.
Severndroog Castle was saved by it's community several years back, so not only was this a perfect venue for us, but paying for a venue that is offering something back to it's local community, felt like the right place to be. They do workshops with kids; have music and food events; theatre stuff and fayres, so we will definitely be coming back for some of the wonderful things they have coming up.
We highly recommend this space for a wedding of 28 or under, as you can have it set up similarly to us, which really worked. You can have up to about 50 people, but then your ceremony would be split between 2 floors and you would have to order the marque outside for food etc, but if you love the space and you are a bigger group, you might want to do this.
