Set in Alton in the Hampshire region of England, Gilbert White & The Oates Collections is an elegant events venue that hosts weddings. This idyllic property is set beneath the Selborne Hanger of the South Downs National Park. Surrounded by heritage gardens and parklands that span across 30 acres, this remarkable location is resplendent with natural beauty that makes a stunning backdrop to any nuptial celebration. As this venue accepts only one event per weekend, you can enjoy an intimate and private celebration surrounded by stunning scenery and your loved ones.
Facilities and Capacity
Gilbert White and the Oates Collections offers a selection of event spaces for engaged couples to choose from. The Hampshire Barn, originally built in the 16th century, offers a special setting for large ceremonies and receptions. Featuring beams stretched across soaring wooden ceilings and complete with stunning views across the surrounding meadows, it provides a rustic and elegant backdrop for celebrations. Couples who are hoping to host a more intimate occasion can avail of the Great Parlour, located inside the historic house itself. This venue also offers an array of outdoor ceremony and reception spaces. The Great Lawn is ideal for reception drinks. For alternative receptions, couples can choose between the surrounding woodlands or amongst the wildflower meadows.

Gilbert White & The Oates Collections offer a range of facilities to ensure seamless and stress-free events. They can provide preferred external catering options, accommodating both banquet-style seated meals and buffets. This venue holds an alcohol licence and offers a corkage option for couples. They also hold an evening licence, with facilities for both live bands and DJs. Throughout the planning process, this team can also provide the services of a dedicated wedding coordinator to assist with every detail. From various bits of planning, right the way through to tidying up after the big day, everything felt fair and we felt nothing but welcomed, accommodated and helped at every turn. From small bits of advice to big decisions, we were listened to and wherever possible, encouraged to follow our vision for the day. Communications were friendly, clear and simple at all times, -and everything worked liked clockwork. We cannot thank the venue and team enough... and will always be grateful for the amazing day we had. - RRowan17/10/2025The Perfect ChoiceThe Perfect ChoiceWe got married at Gilbert White’s House & Gardens in August 2025, and it was everything we’d hoped for and more. The setting is breathtaking, surrounded by nature, with views across the South Downs that make it feel like your own little world. Our ceremony was under a flower arch on the hill, and it couldn’t have been more beautiful or personal. We worked with Jamie, who was amazing from start to finish. He was calm, kind, and so genuinely invested in helping the day run smoothly. He even collected the bridal party from the entrance to make sure the band started at the perfect moment and was so hands on throughout; moving things around, keeping the day flowing, and always one step ahead. He really went above and beyond, and we’re so grateful. The barn looked magical with all the lights, and our guests loved wandering through the gardens and playing games on the lawn. They also provided a great and convenient field for our guests to park in, which made things so easy on the day. We also loved that the venue supports a charity and cares about nature and sustainability, it really made us feel like our money was going to good use beyond our wedding. But expect multiple parking fines even if your told your details have been added in. 6 members of the wedding party got fines, the registra had already had 4 fines for other weddings they had attended, it took 2 months to resolve. Hard to speak to anyone about our wedding, we had to keep chasing to organise things. Also wasn’t great that the day we were setting up they told us they had outside games and decorations we could have used instead of renting them. Wasn’t great communication. Also took us 2months to get the vouchers to give out in thank you cards, we were originally told we would get them the day before the wedding. Also not great that they keep forgetting the grooms name Great venue but you need to take on more responsibility I had the best wedding, the venue is beautiful. The setting is completely stunning, the people are so kind and helpful, the barn itself is gorgeous and the venue added so much character to the day. All of our photos are so stunning. Monique was such a help both in the lead up to the day and on it. The Team was so friendly and it really made planning the day so much easier. The flexibility of the venue added so much personality to our day and we loved the Gilbert White Brewed Beers!Gilbert Whites are the perfect venue. The setting is completely stunning, the people are so kind and helpful, the barn itself is gorgeous and the venue added so much character to the day. All of our photos are so stunning. We looked at a few places but were a bit put off by being told all the things we couldn’t do. For me, the rolling meadow that stretched in front of the barn was just the biggest selling point. It’s magical character and beautiful meadow. The food from our caterers at Clementine Catering was flipping fantastic. Not being lovers of ‘posh grub’, we opted for an afternoon tea and a barbeque which went down really well. From the outset, we knew we wanted a barn wedding. We looked at a few places but were a bit put off by being told all the things we couldn’t do. We wanted the freedom to do things our own way, and the staff at Gilbert White's were more than happy for us to do that while also helping out when asked. When we first went to look round it was a miserable, grey, muddy day in December, but even then we could see that it would be absolutely beautiful in the spring and perfect for how we wanted our day to be; it ticked all the boxes. Even though there wasn't a wedding coordinator in place when we booked, the Directors went above and beyond in answering all our questions and giving us ideas throughout the planning process until the new wedding coordinator came on board, and on the day itself they were all on site and we genuinely felt like they were part of the day too.
