Nestled in the heart of Chelsea on the banks of the Thames lies Chelsea Physic Garden—London’s oldest botanic garden—spanning four acres of thriving plant life comprising one of the world’s most unique microclimate and biodiversity signatures.
From perhaps the world’s oldest Pond Rockery, to the tropical plants housed in our Victorian Glasshouses; the kaleidoscopic Dicotyledon Order Beds, Ginkgo trees, fragrant Mediterranean herbs, carnivorous and poisonous plants, fruiting olives, palms, pomegranates and the terraces and woodland peripheries that enclose two spacious lawns—the Garden casts an uncontrived and truly beautiful backdrop to an event of any kind, and bestows a character unique amongst any other venue so close to the centre of London.
Only a limited number of weddings are permitted at Chelsea Physic Garden each year, to uphold our principal purpose as a working horticultural and educational charity. It also means we and our partner event suppliers can attend to each booking, from beginning to end, with the diligence it deserves.
Don't be afraid to ask your contact at the venue if you are unsure of anything. They know the space and their programme better than anyone else. Remember that when they give advice, it's usually because they know what works well and what doesn't.
A couple were keen gardeners and enthralled by our plant collection. They had a cocktail menu designed and perfectly timed, to include only ingredients that were growing and in season in the botanic garden on that exact date. If the wedding had taken place even a week earlier or later in the year, the recipes could have been completely different.

Our dicotyledon order beds - it's a long and technical word, but it effectively means rows of flowering plants grouped by their plant family . We have an entire acre comprising over 2,000 individual specimens across 40 different plant orders, in curated beds that have remained in exactly the same configuration for over 100 years. The colours and textures change almost every day of the year, while the plants grow above and around the interlocking grass pathways. I can't think of many places within Central London that can offer the same effect of natural wilderness.
Our Victorian Glasshouses also bear a mention - they are made entirely from wood and cast iron, and house some of our most valuable and extraordinary plants - a huge range of patterns and textures.

Our historic walls, secure entrances and tall treelines create a naturally secluded environment and an ideal setting for those wishing to remain private. We have accommodated celebrity clients and guests, but would never disclose who.
A prehistoric plant which is so rare that we're not allowed to disclose its exact location in our grounds - you could walk right past it and wouldn't know it. We're also licensed to grow cannabis, which we do in the context of cultivating plants (alongside cotton, stinging nettles, and flax) used to make fabric and rope. Our pomegranate tree is another highlight, believed to have been planted in the 1730s; guests walk directly under it as they enter the Garden.
Our gardeners, who works tirelessly 365 days a year to cultivate and maintain such a beautiful space.
