Description

Congratulations on your engagement!

Welcome to Mompesson House located in the historical Cathedral Close in Salisbury. Specialising in mid-week, intimate ceremonies for up to 25 guests, our dedicated team understand that you want your day to be personal to you and delight in making your dreams a reality. Whether that's a outdoor ceremony followed by a cream tea in the garden or in one of the gorgeous rooms inside the house. We look forward to welcoming you to Mompesson and making your ceremony one you will cherish forever.

The welcoming and homely townhouse which many families have called home since it was built in 1701, provides a peaceful yet elegant backdrop for your ceremony. Looking out onto The Close and Salisbury Cathedral, the Georgian property is both grand and tranquil with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Guests can arrive via the front doors and mingle pre-ceremony in the beautiful garden or explore the other rooms and history behind the property. The house was used for the filming of Sense and Sensibility with Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant as the 'Dashwoods' London residence and many of the rooms are very recognisable from the film.

Owned by the National Trust, and operated by the experienced events team who work across Mompesson and our sister property Stourhead. When you book your wedding with the team, you are helping to look after and preserve this beautiful property for generations to come. We are licensed for ceremonies throughout the whole property, including the beautiful garden which is at its best in the summer months.

What is your No.1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Always ask your venue to hold your date and check with your county registrars / celebrant before making the booking. You never want to be a position where you have booked the venue but cannot get a registrar or celebrant to conduct the vows!

What’s your favourite personal touch you’ve seen at a wedding?

It is the small things which make a wedding personal, from a reading which resonates with the couples to bringing special goblets from your families silverware collection to toast the ceremony afterwards. We welcome personal touches and are happy to chat through any and all idea's.

Where’s the best photo spot at your venue?

This depends on who you ask in the team! The staircase makes a fabulous backdrop for both couple and group shots. The garden in high summer cannot be equalled for the herbeacous borders and tree canopy as well as the wisteria covered pergola. Equally the bedrooms with the views across the close to the cathedral also make a fabulous shot if in poor weather.

Where does the income from your ceremonies go?

Mompesson is part of the National Trust and as such, we have a duty to look after and conserve the property so that it can be enjoyed by everyone for ever. When you book with us, the income we generate from the ceremonies and events stays at Stourhead and helps us to look after the property and the many conservation projects we undertake.

When is the best time of year to get married at Mompesson House?

The House is beautiful all year around but to make the most of the whole property we advise ceremonies take place in the summer months when both the House and Garden can be enjoyed.

Favourite Location?

The whole property is licensed for ceremonies so you may choose the space which best reflects you. However, the walled garden is a particular favourite with the team when the sun is shining. The beauty of the property is that if it is raining on your special day then we can easily move inside and enjoy the views from the comfort of the House.

What is your venue's most unique feature?

The property was chosen to be the London residence for the Dashwood family in the 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen's, Sense and Sensibility starring Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant. Almost every room in the house was used and are very recognisable in the film.
