Description

The magnificent Merchant Taylors’ Hall, built in 1415 and nestled within the ancient walls of the City of York, has borne witness to centuries of history and been a place for York’s residents to congregate, feast, make music and make merry for more than 600 years. One of the Yorkshire Post's 20 most stunningly scenic wedding destinations, the Hall is steeped in tradition, with medieval beams, a roaring fire in cooler months, and a magical atmosphere year-round, offering a romantic and unforgettable venue for your wedding celebrations. There’s a choice of spaces to accommodate 40 – 120 guests, a lovely garden for photographs, your drinks reception or just to enjoy, and the option of ceremony & reception, or reception-only celebrations. You can use all or some of our event spaces for your wedding - the venue is yours exclusively. All our spaces are flexible so you can lay them out as you’d prefer, and dress them with flowers and decorations to make your special day as unique as you are. Some typical room layouts are shown in our wedding brochure, but we’re always happy to change things to meet your needs wherever possible. If you’d like a helping hand with your ideas we can put you in touch with some amazing suppliers and stylists too! Our caterers will create a bespoke buffet, set meal or banquet menu of delicious food and fine wines to enhance your special day, and there’s also a fully licensed bar offering real ales, pump beers, spirits and wines. Our city centre location is ideal, with free on-site parking for the bridal party and much more available only 400 yards away. York train station is just a 15-minute walk, or short taxi journey, for your guests travelling from further afield. As a registered charity all income we generate from weddings is reinvested in the maintenance of this magnificent Grade 1 listed building, or given in grants to projects involving young people who want to develop their skills in the fields of art, craftsmanship and music.

The cosy wedding of our dreams

We came across the Merchant Taylors Hall in a bit of a fluster, our previously booked venue had gone into liquidation suddenly, leaving us with only 8 months to replan our entire wedding. We phoned pretty much every venue that fit our requirements in york but they were all booked up, until we were recommended the Merchant Taylors Hall. We got a viewing in the next day and the minute we set foot through the little door we knew this was the right venue for us! It had both the gorgeous medieval hall, with its high vaulted ceiling and stained glass windows, and the smaller but no less beautiful blue hall that was the perfect size for our ceremony. Michael, the events manager, found us a list of new suppliers and we suddenly had more planned in 48 hours than we had managed in 2 years with our previous venue. He was always around to answer any questions and helped us fill in all the final details. All the staff were super attentive during the day and helped it run completely without a hitch. The venue is also wonderfully situated in the center of York so we were able to walk to get all the photos we wanted near the minster and on the city walls. If we could give Merchant Taylors more than 5 stars we would! It was super high quality service, a truly unforgettable day and it didn't break the bank.

A happy couple

Merchant Taylor’s Hall is stunning and we knew the minute we walked in and saw it we felt comfortable and special at the same time and we knew we would have the perfect day. We loved the grandeur of the main hall and the elegance of the Blue hall where we had an intimate family afternoon tea with time to relax and chat with close family and friends. Absolutely loved it and would totally recommend it.

The perfect venue, a hidden gem

The venue itself is the perfect space with drinks and canapés outside in the beautiful garden with the bar walls in the background and the beautiful and historic hall setting the perfect backdrop. You can’t quite believe this is in the heart of York. A special shout out to Michael who worked to make our day better than we ever thought it could be.

The perfect space for an amazing day

We were so happy when we found Merchant Taylor’s hall - it ticked every box we wanted! The location was amazing (central enough but also that little bit private), and the space inside was fantastic to host our wedding reception in. Thank you Merchant Taylor’s’ Hall

The perfect venue

We had a beautiful February wedding at Merchant Taylor's, and it was a perfect day. The venue itself is stunning, and the open fire added to the atmosphere. All in all, we couldn't have asked for a better venue. It was central, well-managed, and absolutely beautiful. In our opinion, this venue is just as pretty as other, more expensive and more well-known York wedding venues. It's a little hidden gem, and we couldn't be happier to have had our wedding here!

Gorgeous venue

We had a beautiful February wedding at Merchant Taylor's, and it was a perfect day. The venue itself is stunning, and the open fire added to the atmosphere. The manager Michael was friendly and helpful with all our requests, and a staff member was on hand on the day itself to help with any issues. Our guests complemented the venue, and we were able to use both the outside and inside for photos. It was very easy to get good photos, both at the venue and in town, due to the venue being so central. We were also able to park a few cars at the venue, which was very helpful. In addition, we were able to come collect our things the next morning, and the staff did all the cleanup. We were also able to use an upstairs room for getting ready in the morning - all of these details just made the day so much easier. We had brilliant caterers (Nomad) chosen from the venue's selected list, which worked really well. We also decided to use the main hall for dinner, and the smaller room for dancing - which is also where the bar is located. This worked really well, as we could keep the tables up for cake eating and chatting, while also having a dancing space. All in all, we couldn't have asked for a better venue. It was central, well-managed, and absolutely beautiful. In our opinion, this venue is just as pretty as other, more expensive and more well-known York wedding venues. It's a little hidden gem, and we couldn't be happier to have had our wedding here!

The day we got hitched!

Merchant Taylor’s Hall is stunning and we knew the minute we walked in and saw it and met Michael that we felt comfortable and special at the same time and we knew we would have the perfect day. The hall is medieval and has so much character and it has everything we were looking for. We loved the grandeur of the main hall and the elegance of the Blue hall where we had an intimate family afternoon tea with time to relax and chat with close family and friends. Michael was great and nothing was too much trouble and he even gave us a little history lesson about the Hall. Everyone loved the relaxed atmosphere and helped themselves to drinks and then as the temperature cooled it was so beautiful to light the fire in the large fireplace and fill the Hall with warmth and love. It wasn’t conventional but it all worked and the stained glass windows and wood panelling just made it feel very special. Absolutely loved it and would totally recommend it. Thank you so much Michael. I just wish we could do it all over again.
