Merchant Taylors' Hall, York Full Description
The magnificent Merchant Taylors’ Hall, built in 1415 and nestled within the ancient walls of the City of York, has borne witness to centuries of history and been a place for York’s residents to congregate, feast, make music and make merry for more than 600 years. One of the Yorkshire Post's 20 most stunningly scenic wedding destinations, the Hall is steeped in tradition, with medieval beams, a roaring fire in cooler months, and a magical atmosphere year-round, offering a romantic and unforgettable venue for your wedding celebrations. There’s a choice of spaces to accommodate 40 – 120 guests, a lovely garden for photographs, your drinks reception or just to enjoy, and the option of ceremony & reception, or reception-only celebrations. You can use all or some of our event spaces for your wedding - the venue is yours exclusively. All our spaces are flexible so you can lay them out as you’d prefer, and dress them with flowers and decorations to make your special day as unique as you are. Some typical room layouts are shown in our wedding brochure, but we’re always happy to change things to meet your needs wherever possible. If you’d like a helping hand with your ideas we can put you in touch with some amazing suppliers and stylists too! Our caterers will create a bespoke buffet, set meal or banquet menu of delicious food and fine wines to enhance your special day, and there’s also a fully licensed bar offering real ales, pump beers, spirits and wines. Our city centre location is ideal, with free on-site parking for the bridal party and much more available only 400 yards away. York train station is just a 15-minute walk, or short taxi journey, for your guests travelling from further afield. As a registered charity all income we generate from weddings is reinvested in the maintenance of this magnificent Grade 1 listed building, or given in grants to projects involving young people who want to develop their skills in the fields of art, craftsmanship and music.

The perfect venue, a hidden gem in the heart of York!

From start to finish, our experience with Michael at the Merchant Taylor’s Hall was calm, reassuring and well thought through. The venue itself is the perfect space - we had a summer wedding and I couldn’t have imagined a better spot. Drinks and canapés outside in the beautiful garden with the bar walls in the background and the beautiful and historic hall setting the perfect backdrop. You can’t quite believe this is in the heart of York. The space inside works perfectly for weddings - the blue room for our ceremony was incredible with the light streaming in through the stained glass windows. Likewise the main hall was the perfect size for our long top table and 8 round tables (around 80 guests). The blue room can then be used for the evening dance floor which was also the ideal space, leaving the main hall for guests to relax in. A special shout out to Michael who worked to make our day better than we ever thought it could be. He was accommodating and full of ideas about how to work the venue to its maximum potential. Would also recommend Saunts Caterers who provided the perfect summer banquet, our DJ James Wright (Wright Technical Services), our photographer Alice Little (alittlepicture.com) and the Roaming Tones (a fab roaming acoustic band - Tailored Entertainment). All our guests were in awe of the building and couldn't believe it how perfect it was for a wedding day. Cannot recommend the MT Hall enough, thank you for the perfect day!

Incredible day in medieval hall in brilliant York

After seeing many venues, my husband and I realised we wanted somewhere that captured the beautiful medieval spirit of York to hold our marriage reception. We had guests fly in from all over the world so we wanted something unique and typical of York, not just another generic hotel wedding. The Merchant Taylor's Hall provided just that. It's a very impressive old hall that had the magic we were looking for. The main room was just right for our guest numbers and was later turned into our dance floor. The smaller gorgeous blue room was our bar. We didn't need many decorations either as the hall was so beautiful to start with. Best day of our lives and the Merchant Taylor's Hall provided the perfect backdrop.

The most perfect day

We had a lovely wedding and didn’t have to worry about a thing, the hall’s team liaised with the band and the caterers and took all the stress out of the day. The venue was perfect with so much character and a great size and a great side room for dancing which meant those who would rather a quieter corner could. Great location for those travelling in and just well prefect! Wouldn’t change a thing!

An Intimate Celebration

Andrew and I wanted to say thank you for helping us create an intimate and special wedding day. Although we only had a small wedding your staff were so attentive and added to the occasion. Our wedding ceremony in the Blue Hall was beautiful and was followed by amazing food and service in the Great Hall. Thank you XX.

A Special Place

Thank you for the most special day, the hall was an amazing venue with all its history, it has a warm cosy and welcoming feeling especially with the large open fire roaring on a cold winters day. Thanks to all the team for everything they did.

Perfect wedding venue

We cannot thank the team at Merchant Taylor’s enough for helping to make our wedding day so memorable. This has to be the very best venue in York if you are planning a bespoke wedding rather than a standard hotel package! The building is romantic and atmospheric, and the garden in front of the hall was perfect for our drinks reception. Our caterers and florist were able to set up the day before and the staff at Merchant Taylor’s couldn’t have been more helpful. We highly recommend it!
