We’re Special Day Films; friendly, down-to-earth wedding videographers based in York. We specialise in a blend of cinematic and candid videography, and we’re delighted that you’ve found us, whatever stage you’re at in your wedding planning!
We've filmed weddings all over the country, in all kinds of venues, for people with all kinds of budgets, and we’ve always loved how a couple’s personalities can be threaded through the day; sometimes these things are planned, like your theme for the table names or your music choices. But it’s also things like the quiet shared moments with your nearest and dearest in the build-up, or the thing that didn’t quite go as planned but made you laugh anyway, or the no-nonsense bridesmaid getting unexpectedly choked up. These are the things we’ll be looking for when we’re making the video of your special day.
We get a lot of compliments about how unobtrusive we are on the day, the value for money we offer, and we take great pride in the fact that we are often asked back to work for friends and relations of previous couples - it’s always lovely to see familiar faces (as well as pregnancy bumps or new additions to families!) from past bookings.
We take tremendous pride in our work and our prices are based on the time and care we’ll be putting into the finished product (we’re not just trying to make the best wedding videos in the UK, more importantly we’re trying to make the best wedding videos in North Yorkshire!). Our wedding video packages are flexible so that you get a video or series of videos that are tailor-made for you and capture the parts of the day most important to you - there are cinematic highlights as well as candid videos from throughout the day, and you only pay for the bits you want, so you get excellent value for money (like we said: Yorkshire).

Describe your typical process with a couple.
After they get in touch we any questions they might have and find out what they want from their videos. We'll send over a booking form and reserve the date for with a deposit. You can also secure the date first and decide on a package later!
Our packages include unlimited pre-wedding consultations so we're available to chat as often as required in the build-up to the big day. Sometimes we film pre-wedding interviews to create a great little time capsule to look back on in years to come.
We'll get your schedule for the day and the contact info for someone in your wedding party who can be our liaison on the day to make sure you're free to relax without worrying about us. On the day we arrive with enough time to say hello again, and after that you'll probably barely notice us.
After the day itself, we'll get stuck into the editing. We'll send you downloads as soon as they're ready to watch and share, and then we'll send you the eco-friendly USB sticks in the post, with all your videos on.
Describe your style in 5 adjectives.
This is a cheat (more than 5 adjectives), but a photographer once described us as "epic observers of people" - we're always looking for the little moments that tell your story. And we try not to take ourselves too seriously!
How soon do couples need to book and how far will you travel?
Most people book a year in advance but don’t be afraid to ask last minute, sometimes we still have availability. Regarding travel, our price options are for weddings within a 50 mile radius of York, but we have travelled all over (it’s a great chance to catch up on podcasts!). Let us know where you’re getting married and if it’s further afield we will customise the price for your quote.
What are the extended films like?
Full-length videos of the ceremony and speeches give you a chance to record these moments for posterity in their entirety. This means if the ceremony was half an hour, the video is half an hour.
Extended videos of the pre-ceremony preparations, reception, and evening reception can vary in length, but we use them as an opportunity to spend more time with your guests, and capture more of the decorations and details.
The highlights videos are the big show-stopper, but the extended films are a more comprehensive record of the day for you to watch back in years to come.

Do we really need a 2nd camera operator? And do you take photos?
You absolutely do not need an extra camera operator. But it means twice as much coverage of your special day; good as Adam is, he can only be in one place at a time! The additional extended videos you get with our more comprehensive packages are made possible by having an extra camera operator on the day!
We do dabble in photography but we don’t do combined wedding videos and photographs. We do have recommendations for some fantastic wedding photographers though, so please ask if you’d like those!
What about your business are you most proud of?
The feedback we get is always really nice. As well as being there on the day itself we also put a lot of time and care into the edit, so when customers see the finished product and they tell you how happy they are, it really means a lot! Likewise, when you know someone was really nervous beforehand and a little camera-shy, to have them say they felt really at ease with us and happy with the results gives us a massive amount of satisfaction.
What is your No.1 wedding planning tip for couples?
Remember that it's YOUR day, have a wedding that reflects you as individuals.
Also, remember that the day will fly by in a blur; make sure you get a photographer and videographer that you trust and who's work you love. That way you'll be able to re-live it all over and over again, and enjoy any little moments you missed on the day.
What your favourite detail you've spotted at a wedding and what is your most memorable wedding?
It's too hard to pick a favourite detail! We always keep our eye out - and our camera ready - for the little moments that make a wedding unique to the couple though! And our second ever wedding was for Queen Camilla's son, Tom Parker Bowles - that was pretty memorable! We had better access than the BBC!
What if I'm anxious or shy? What if my family dynamic is weird?
We know not everyone loves being in front of a camera, but we get lots of compliments about how unobtrusive we are. When we know someone was really nervous beforehand and a little camera-shy, to have them say they felt really at ease with us and happy with the results gives us a massive amount of satisfaction. If you’re really worried about it, let us know and we can go the extra mile to make you comfortable.
And families can be complicated! Let us know if there’s anything specific you need us to be sensitive of. It’s your day, we want you to enjoy it!
