Unusual Venues of Edinburgh comprises award-winning venues The Caves, The Rowantree & Marlin’s Wynd, and are a tantalising blend of gothic, romantic and historic.
The Caves, our grandest venue, can host between 70 & 150 day guests, and 200+ guests in the evening; our more homely venue, The Rowantree, is ideal for between 50 & 70 day guests and up to 110 in the evening; and Marlin’s Wynd, our most intimate venue, beautifully houses between 40 & 50 day guests, and up to 120 in the evening.
Modern facilities blend seamlessly with original craftsmanship to create exclusive-use venues that are nothing short of magical; backdrops ideal for your fairy tale wedding.

I have always liked gothic things (clothes, architchture, the lot!). So when looking for a venue in 2022 I typed in 'unusual wedding venues' and obviously these guys came up. We loved the photos online and my partner was born in Scotland and lived in Edinburgh as a child. He had taken me there back in 2019 and I absolutely loved the city. We visited The Rowantree and Marlin's Wynd in January 2023 and we fell in love with The Rowantree instantly. Since we agreed to go ahead with the venue the wedding team have been fantasic. They provided us with recommended suppliers/vendors which helped us greatly as we didn't live in the local area. They were very accommodating and kept in contact regularly. We also liked that the payment for the venue was in installments so it wasn't a big bill at the end. Dylan and his team (as well as the bar staff, waiters and waitresses, the security guy on the door) on the big day were amazing. So friendly as well as professional. All my guests said how great they all were and good with the children that attended the wedding. Everything seemed to flow seemlessly and they looked after us all so well. Our wedding was the BEST and it was everything I wanted it to be and more and most of that was down to The Rowantree staff. Even the suppliers/vendors we used that they recommended were really nice and did an amazing job at making made our day what it was and we may not have chosen them without The Rowntree's recommendations. It's a really beautiful historic venue and very Edinburgh. We spoke with Caroline mainly throughout planning our big day and she was just amazing and really made our big day everything we could have dreamed of and more alongside the rest of the team! Our guests all commented on how amazing the food was, helpful the staff were and beautiful the venue was. It truly was the best day and we can't thank the guys are Unusual Venues enough! The minute we view Marlins Wynd we knew it was the venue for us, such a stunning venue, so unique and the staff couldn't do more to help. We spoke with Caroline mainly throughout planning our big day and she was just amazing and really made our big day everything we could have dreamed of and more alongside the rest of the team! It was completely perfect from start to finish. They helped us feel so relaxed and contacted suppliers on our behalf to alleviate additional stress prior to and on our big day. The team were so responsive and helpful throughout the early days and on the days leading up to our day. Lisa and Dylan went above and beyond to help us get ready and deliver a day we’ll never forget. They were so open and helpful and I never felt like I had to worry about anything. They truly had it all handled, from scheduling vendors to set up. It was seamless. On the big day, the set up was perfect and the entire vibe felt so relaxed and fun. The whole team were friendly, helpful and fun all day and night. We are so grateful to everyone that helped make our day special. I would recommend The Caves and the team at Unusual Venues for any event. They’re the GOAT. The entire staff is incredibly kind, professional, and amiable. The facility itself is quite beautiful and located in Old Town, just off the Royal Mile. The entire crew was outstanding, the cuisine was highly praised, the bar was well-stocked, and the day went to perfection. The venue made the set-up arrangements with our vendors, taking a bit of stress off our shoulders. We were able to drop off decorations and bits the day before and collect them again the day after. Special mention for Dylan who looked after us, absolute legend. If I was to do it all again, there may be things I would change, but the venue would not be one of them. Despite us living in London the team at Unusual Venues were really supportive throughout and responsive . They helped think about all the details and were very patient with all my emails ! On the day all the staff were fantastic - all the guests commented how helpful and friendly they were. I was handed champagne at all the right moments and I just can’t fault anything. All my prep instructions and asks were seen to and it made the day just exceptional. , I only wish we could do it all again in slow motion as the day went so fast! We booked our wedding at The Caves because it’s such a unique and beautiful venue . Despite us living in London the team at Unusual Venues were really supportive throughout and responsive . As soon as we saw the cave we knew it was exactly what we wanted. We had a fantastic day - the food was amazing and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. Multiple viewings were offered for walk rounds to help us find the right suppliers. The day itself went without a fault and the staff were just the best. Nothing was too much trouble and the turn around of room and other spaces were carried out quickly and seamlessly to the point we didn’t even notice things moving about with no disruption. Food was amazing and so tasty especially the night time buffet items - pies and pizza! Everyone was so friendly making sure us and our guests were happy and I could not recommend the venue and the team enough. What is your No.1 wedding planning tip for couples?
Enjoy the planning process. Every moment leading up to your big day should be just as fun and exhilarating as the wedding itself. Easier said than done, but we’re always on hand to shoulder any stresses that come up. So no matter how insignificant your query might feel, pick up the phone and give us a call.
What’s your favourite personal touch you’ve seen at a wedding?
Some of the ones that have stuck with us include an owl ring bearer; dog bridesmaids; disco balls incorporated into floral arrangements; personalised leather jackets; and a family sword used for the cake cutting.

Where’s the best photo spot at your venue?
In The Caves it would have to be The Foundation Room, under the arches of the South Bridge, surrounded by dazzling candlelight. The Rowantree is famous for its cow outside – so you’ll capture some stunning snaps out on the Cowgate. At Marlin’s Wynd, photographs on the fairy-light wrapped staircase are truly unforgettable.
Have you had any celebrity guest or wedding at your venue?
Yes, both as a member of the wedding party and as a guest -- unfortunately, I can't say much more than that 🤐
What’s your favourite canapé?
The *chorizo and pork quail Scotch eggs* are absolutely delectable, and with a lovely Scottish twist. For our vegan guests, my personal favourite is the *crispy cauliflower pop with sweet & sour dip* -- but there are so many possibilities!
What’s your favourite midnight treat?
Nothing hits the spot quite like a hog roast roll after a few drinks and ceilidh dancing – alongside a wee midnight pie, vegan and vegetarian options available.
What is your venue's most unique feature?
Our unique history lends itself to the most gorgeous, bare-stone venues, lit by candlelight.
What part of your business are you most proud of?
We are a collection of three stunning venues unlike any other. We cannot fake what we do, it cannot be replicated, and that makes every single day – and every single wedding – that bit more special. We’re a tantalising blend of the Gothic, traditional, romantic, historical, fairy tale – and will bring to life any couple’s dream wedding.
