MJH Pictures Full Description
It’s important to know that I’m a pretty easy-going guy and I like to think that this comes across in my pictures. With this in mind I always try and meet with couples when they’re thinking about their photography. Just to sit there and have a chat over a coffee and not even talk about weddings will help you decide what sort of person your photographer is. It’s important that you click (no pun intended). If you decide that you hate me, then that’s totally cool. No harm, no foul. A lot of my couples have actually told me though that, when it came down to making a decision, the fact that I was happy to meet for a chat with no pressure helped them make up their minds. Then, when the day of the wedding came around, it was nice to have a friendly face in the morning during all the preparation. What is my style? Well, I guess I would fit into the reportage or documentary bracket. I don’t like to call it that though as it feels a little pretentious. The reality is I just use patience and observation. I also listen. When the time is right, I take the picture. It’s about capturing the fun, the emotion and the honesty. That’s the real story of your day. But if you want group shots then I’m more than happy to do those as well and we’ll work together to make sure that they’re in the schedule Most photographers will only go up to the end of the first dance. But to me, as well as being a declaration and commitment of your love for each other, a wedding is also a cause for celebration and a party. You might well have friends and family flying in from all over. So it’s important to me that I capture that party element as well so I'll often be found on the dancefloor avoiding flying arms and legs to get the shot.

FAQs
Find out a bit more from our FAQs

What is your most memorable wedding?

I love "at home" weddings, with a marquee in the garden of the house where the bride grew up. I've done loads and one from last summer sticks out as the setting was beautiful in the rolling hills of Wiltshire, the weather was perfect, the guests had the best time and the band were brilliant. Not to mention the couple who were so chilled, so in love and the biggest laugh.

Describe your style in 5 adjectives.

Unobtrusive, natural, honest, relaxed, fun

What about your business are you most proud of?

Building it up after a change in career (I worked in Broadcast Media producing and Directing telly)

What is your No. 1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Don't panic, trust the process. The week before the wedding, go on a date night with no wedding talk - just enjoy each other's company.

What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?

Wedding tables named after Blackadder episodes "Oh look Darling, we're on the Baby Eating Bishop of Bath & Wells table".

Describe your typical process with a couple.

Initial email chat - meet face to face for a coffee ( no pressure) - booking and contract signing and deposit - engagement shoot (sometimes, again, no pressure) - pre-wedding consultations (schedule planning etc.) - site recce (for me) - wedding day! - bridal prep - ushers lunch - back to bride for first look - church - reception - dancing - leave when the bride and groom do

What is the No. 1 photo that you think every couple should take?

Either coming out of the church for the first time (just for the look of excitement - we did it!) or just the bride and groom where they take 5 minutes in late afternoon for a breather.

What is the most original photo you’ve been asked to take at a wedding?

Every photo is different and original.

What do you recommend for a rainy day wedding?

Always have a plan B for photos - discuss with your venue and photographer prior to the day after checking forecast.

Describe how you got into photography.

I spent 15 years in Broadcast Media, producing and directing programmes for Sky. Travelled the word, met loads of cool people but yearned to get out of the corporate environment. Redundancy gave me the nudge I needed and I've never looked back.
