One of my most memorable weddings was in Scotland, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Highlands. What I’m most proud of in my photography business is the trust couples place in me to capture one of the most meaningful days of their lives. The most beautiful, natural photos happen when you’re not rushed—whether it’s your first look, sunset portraits, or candid moments with family. Plan extra time between key events so you can actually be present, relax, and enjoy the day instead of feeling like you’re racing the clock. One of my favorite personal touches I’ve seen at a wedding was when a couple incorporated handwritten letters to each guest, placed at their table setting. Each note shared a memory, a thank you, or a heartfelt message about why that person was meaningful in their lives. As a photographer, it was beautiful to capture guests opening the envelopes, smiling, tearing up, and embracing the couple afterward. It turned the reception into such an emotional, intimate experience and made everyone feel truly valued. On the wedding day, my approach is a balance of guiding when needed and blending in quietly to capture candid, genuine moments as they unfold.

The one photo I believe every couple should take is a quiet, intimate portrait of just the two of them, away from the crowd. It doesn’t have to be posed—often it’s during golden hour, when the light is soft and magical, and they can simply hold each other, laugh, or share a private moment. This image becomes more than a portrait; it’s a reflection of their connection in the middle of such a busy, emotional day. Years from now, that single photo will instantly bring them back to the joy, love, and stillness they felt together on their wedding day.

One of the most original photos I’ve been asked to take was a couple canoeing across a loch in Scotland right after their ceremony. They wanted something adventurous and completely unique to them, as they both loved the outdoors and spent much of their relationship hiking and kayaking together. The bride still wore her gown, and the groom helped paddle while they laughed and soaked in the scenery. It was such a beautiful mix of elegance and playfulness, and the reflection of the mountains on the water made it unforgettable. Capturing their love in such a personal way felt magical.

Rain on a wedding day isn’t a setback—it can actually create some of the most stunning and romantic photos. My top recommendation is to embrace it rather than stress. Bring stylish umbrellas, rain boots, or a cozy shawl; these can double as fun props in portraits. I also scout covered locations for candid shots, like archways, porches, or indoor corners with great natural light. Wet streets, glistening pavements, and soft overcast skies add a dreamy, cinematic quality to images. Couples who relax, laugh, and enjoy the rain often end up with the most memorable and unique photos of their day.
