I'd been included in the wedding service rehearsals by a lovely couple who also invited me as a guest to their evening party. The service and reception were beautiful occasions, but the evening hit disaster when the DJ's equipment blew up!! Despite the long day, I played party music for dancing. The bride wanted to dance with her father to Chris de Burgh's 'Lady in Red' - as a child, she'd been his Lady in Red - but was heartbroken that the DJ was gone; I stepped in to play it on sax ......... the moment was so beautiful, there was hardly a dry eye in the room!
Accomplished; friendly; reassuring; flexible; fun.
Brides & grooms and their guests are always delighted enjoying their favourites on sax! I always enjoy chatting with any children present, even if I have to break my schedule and play something for them. The 3 times I played at the home of Rishi Sunak, his small children were in awe - especially when I played their requests!
Be individual - do what's right for you!
I played at a rock festival-themed wedding, the room had been decorated by the couple so there were posters of classic rock bands - e.g. Queen, Saxon, Santana - on the walls, whilst the bride had made all the table features. The 'cake' was actually a pile of doughnuts! 10/10 for individuality!
Once a booking is confirmed, I send out my complete repertoire (and send out updates as new songs are added). I also send the booking form for them to complete and return, at which point I send the contract for their signature and return. If feasible, I like to visit the couple at home, to go through their music choices and other important matters.
Whilst many couples will ask their DJ to play a favourite dance track, a truly romantic song should be a slow, gentle perennial such as Elvis Presley's 'Can't Help Falling In Love' or 'Crazy' by Patsy Cline - both sound stunning played on the saxophone.
One Step Beyond (Madness)
The most requested song is Baker Street - I have both the original version and a club mix!
I wouldn't - I love doing what I do now!
I can't answer that as I enjoy all the styles of music I play - from dance/party numbers, pop/movie hits and back to older jazz and Gatsby tunes .... and much more!
