Abigail's Vintage Bridal Full Description
Abigail’s Vintage Bridal sources the finest original, unique and authentic vintage wedding gowns from around the world. All dresses are meticulously cleaned and restored to their full glory. The collection always has at least 200 original dresses in stock, dating from as early as 1890 to as late as the early 1970s. Every piece is carefully chosen as a wonderful example of period style. Including exclusive consultation and fitting services, we also offer a comprehensive alteration service, as vintage wedding dresses are not museum pieces and sometimes require gentle tweaking to bring them into line with a more modern taste, without taking away from the essential style of the dress. This alteration service is particularly useful as vintage dresses do tend to be on the smaller side, and were often made to be worn over quite supportive under garments! Our boutique also includes vintage accessories and shoes that have a truly timeless quality to complete your vintage look. We have a selection of unique vintage pieces from tiaras and headpieces created from vintage jewellery, including broaches, lace collars, fur and veils to compliment your choice of dress. Finally, Abigail herself is a true vintage bridal expert. Abigail’s passion for the history of fashion started in her youth, most of which was spent watching black and white movies. A historian by training, and with expansive costume design experience in film, theatre, television and designing, it would be hard to find a more qualified expert to guide you through the wonders of vintage bridal wear for your perfect day.

Describe your typical process with a couple.

Our boutique runs on an appointment only basis, allowing brides to have private and fully-guided consultations. Consultations are allocated 1 ½ hours so there is plenty of time to try things on. You are encouraged to bring along someone you trust; it is much more fun to have your best friend or Mum with you – and decision making is easier too. During the consultation we will discuss the style you are looking for, and together we will pick dresses that suit your personal tastes and overall wedding theme and feel. If you have found a dress you love, than we can provide in-house alterations to make sure it fits absolutely perfectly for your wedding day.

What do you love most about your job?

Working with the brides to find a dress that is unique and that transcends its time.

What is your favourite style of wedding dress?

The Edwardian lace is magical.

What is the best way to incorporate "Something Blue" into the wedding outfit?

Some original dresses have little blue bows sewn onto the inside, which we try to leave in if at all possible. A little bit of blue on hair piece is also lovely. One of our brides had a swatch of her husbands blue RAF uniform, we cut it into a heart shape and sewed it into the the bodice of her dress, a really romantic touch.

What is your favourite wedding dress of all time?

1950s Chanel style striped organdie. A dress with such understated impact, real style over fashion. http://earthyphotography.com/wedding-photography-10-11-carlton-house-terrace/
