Vineyard Venues
As New Zealand's largest wine-growing region, Marlborough is famed for its winery venues. Imagine saying 'I do' amongst rows of Sauvignon Blanc vines, with receptions held in elegant barrel rooms or modern restaurants overlooking the Wairau Valley. These venues often provide exceptional in-house catering and wine lists.
Coastal & Sounds Venues
For a different kind of natural beauty, the Marlborough Sounds offer breathtaking waterfront locations. Venues range from luxury lodges accessible only by boat to charming retreats in towns like Picton, providing a serene and exclusive atmosphere.
Country Estates & Lodges
Beyond the vineyards, you'll find private estates and luxury lodges offering manicured gardens, historic homesteads, and complete privacy for your event. These venues are perfect for multi-day celebrations and often include on-site accommodation.
Legal Requirements
To marry in New Zealand, you must apply for a marriage licence at least three working days before your ceremony. You can do this online. You will also need to engage a registered marriage celebrant to officiate the ceremony.
Venue Hire Fees
Venue hire in Marlborough can vary significantly. Expect to find options ranging from NZD $5,000 for a more straightforward space to over NZD $20,000 for exclusive use of a premium winery estate or luxury lodge. Prices are highest during the peak summer season.
Cost Per Head
For venues offering all-inclusive packages (including food and beverages), prices typically start from NZD $150 and can exceed $250 per guest. This often represents good value and simplifies budgeting.
What's Included?
Always check what is covered. A 'dry hire' fee may only include the space itself. All-inclusive packages might cover:
Marquee hire, floral arrangements, and entertainment are usually additional costs.
Summer (December – February)
This is the peak wedding season. You'll enjoy long, warm, and sunny days, ideal for outdoor ceremonies and receptions. The vineyards are lush and green. Demand is extremely high, so booking 12-18 months in advance is essential.
Autumn (March – May)
A very popular season with photographers. The weather is typically settled and mild, and the vineyards turn stunning shades of gold and orange, creating a spectacular backdrop for photos. It offers a beautiful, romantic atmosphere.
Winter (June – August)
The off-season offers potential for lower venue hire costs. Days are crisp and often clear with snow-capped mountains in the distance. This season is perfect for cosy indoor weddings with open fires and a focus on intimate, atmospheric celebrations.
Spring (September – November)
The region comes to life with bud burst in the vineyards and spring blooms. The weather can be more unpredictable, so having a solid indoor backup plan is crucial, but it can be a beautiful and vibrant time to get married.
Getting There
Marlborough is easily accessible. Guests can fly into Marlborough Airport (BHE) in Blenheim from major New Zealand cities. Alternatively, the Interislander and Bluebridge car ferries provide a scenic connection between Wellington in the North Island and Picton in the Marlborough Sounds.
Guest Transport
Many top venues are located in rural vineyard areas. It is highly recommended to arrange coaches or shuttle buses to transport guests between their accommodation and the venue. This ensures everyone's safety and convenience, as local taxi and ride-sharing services can be limited.
Accommodation For Guests
Marlborough offers a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets.
Consider arranging room blocks at a local hotel for travelling guests.
