It is charming and romantic to stay in a French chateau and that this is. Originally housed an exiled king. If we had it to do over, we would still stay here but we would be better informed about what are realistic expectations and which are not. It is not luxurious by any means but it is authentic and romantic.
The building is an old stone structure built in the 1600s and staying here feels a bit like camping out. Lots of drafty windows and doors, spider webs and bugs, poorly functioning heat, rough bathing facilities-I think there were 4 bathrooms with showers and the rest just had bath tubs. Plumbing could be challenging.
It is awe inspiring to stay in a place with rich history and to have as many as 20 people all staying in the same place (the number changes depending on if all of the building spaces such as the tower and the library/owner's rooms in the main building are available. Confirm with the owner in advance to avoid needs assumptions being made that are not convenient).
There is a lovely entry hall where guests can gather, with paintings of the exiled king and queen who lived there, and a piano.
There is a dining room which seats around 20 people and a library/living room adjacent to the dining room which can fit maybe 40 for an inside gathering. If you are planning a larger event, or if you want to include dancing, you will need to have your event outside.
Communication of expectations with the owners could be challenging. They were nice and stayed on the property but stayed out of sight for the most part. Their daughter hires as florist and event planner though again, it is important to be really clear about what you need that support to look like. She also stayed out of sight for the most part.
The working kitchen is one of the stronger amenities available. Hire a chef to prepare and serve your meals. The owners can help you find someone and it makes more sense than trying to prepare and serve your own meals. If you are going to be in a chateau...!
