The feudal castle of Bazoches, built in the twelfth century, has a trapezoidal architecture consisting of four towers and a keep surrounding an interior courtyard.
Successively owned by the lords of Bazoches, Chastellux, Montmorillon and la Perrière, Bazoches was acquired in 1675 by Marshal de Vauban.
As soon as he settled in Bazoches, Vauban made numerous adjustments there and transformed it into a military garrison. It was in Bazoches, notably in the large gallery of the recently reconstructed castle, that Vauban, founder of the Génie, carried out studies and plans for more than three hundred works and strongholds and that he developed methods of attack and defence. defense of fortifications which made him an undisputed master of siege strategy and military architecture. It was also there that his reflections on a host of subjects that he humorously called his “Idleness” were meditated on and written down. Finally, it was in Bazoches that he wrote the daring “Dîme Royale” whose distribution was immediately banned.
Descendants of Charlotte de Vauban, eldest daughter of the Marshal, the current owners carefully preserve, among rich furniture, numerous memories of their illustrious ancestor.
